He became Guru after his father the ninth guru had given his life for the Hindu's.

He created the Khalsa (the pure ones) in 1699 changing Sikh's into saint soldiers. He created the Amrit ceremony where whoever is willing to give their head to the Guru can go through the ceremony and dedicate their lives to living the way the Guru's have said and keeping the 5 symbols that define them from any other person and can make them stand out.

- The steel bangle symbolising the idea of reincarnation as well as hand cuffs where one is stuck in this world so therefore must do good actions with hands.

- Not cut their hair as cutting it is against the will of God he created us in a way so why go against it if you truly love him.

- Keeping a comb with you which stands for maintaining a clean image of yourself.

- Loose undergarments with a drawstring to discourage adultery and always staying loyal as one is untying the drawstring they are given time to think about what they are about to do.

- A sword which is given both to males and females as all are equal to give them power to protect themselves and others.

As well as this he gave the last names Kaur meaning princess for females and Singh meaning lion for males to replace the names defining ones caste.

He fought battles with the Mughals nearly for his entire life and sacrificed his life as well as his whole family for the Sikh faith.

He is seen as the father of Sikhs and said so what if all my sons are killed thousands still live on. Again his sacrifice is also unparallel within history.
