Guru Nanak - Guru from 1469 to 1539

The first Guru of the Sikhs and founder was Guru Nanak.

He was born at Talwandi now in Pakistan named Nankana Sahib.

He mastered languages such as Punjabi, Sanskrit and Persian at a small age and was strictly against rituals, caste, prejudice, hyprocasy and idoltry.

He made it clear that there was no Muslim and no Hindu he regarded them as equal as God has no religion so saw everyone as equal.

There were four great journeys that Guru Nanak made- all parts of India, Arabia and Persia; visiting Mecca and Baghdad. He spoke before Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Parees and Muslims. He mostly went to the temples and mosques as well as other pilgrimage sites.

He never asked his listeners to follow him. He asked the Muslims to be true Muslims and the Hindus to be true Hindus.

Guru Nanak always spoke out against empty religious rituals, pilgrimages, caste discrimation, sacrifice of widows and of depending on books to learn about the true religion.
